The Sinus tarsi syndrome
Something that can commonly follow a poorly rehabilitated ankle sprain and lead to a chronic pain problem in the rear foot is what we called Sinus tarsi syndrome. The sinus tarsi are a small tunnel of bone between the talus (ankle bone) and calcaneus (heel bone). The sinus is composing of soft tissue, ligaments, nerves and blood vessels that can easily be damaged as part of an ankle sprain. The damage to the sinus tarsi might not get recognized or diagnosed, because of the pain and swelling from the ankle sprain. It’s only can be noticed soon after that there is some pain in the sinus tarsi.
